In 2005, the great historian David McCullough gave a speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan on the importance of teaching and learning history. He recounted giving a seminar to history graduate students at an Ivy League college, and finding that not one of the students knew who George Marshall was. As shocking as that is to believe, the point was that American colleges, and high and elementary schools, don’t teach history. McCullough told the Hillsdale students, “We have to know who we were if we’re to know who we are and where we’re headed.” “We should never look down on those of the past and say they should have known better. What do you think they will be saying about us in the future? They’re going to be saying we should have known better. Why in the world did we do that? What could we have been thinking? Samuel Elliot Morrison said we ought to read history because it will help us to behave better.” McCullough did not mince words, “We are raising a generation of young Americans who are by and large historically illiterate.” He’s right. And the fact that young people are ignorant of history is not only a shame, it’s a clear and present danger to our Republic. I was reminded of the existential threat to our freedoms this past weekend when two separate acts of domestic terrorism occurred without so much as a yawn or a notice by the media. In Colorado, a mob protesting the deportation of illegal aliens stormed an ICE facility, tore down the flags, wrote “Abolish ICE on one, and replaced the American flag with a flag of Mexico. The police stood by and did nothing. In Tacoma, Washington, a band of Antifa hooded bastards, armed with firearms, homemade bombs and Molotov cocktails, attacked an ICE detention facility. The mob’s leader, one Willem Van Spronsen, who had a record of attacking police officers, led this attack, planning to blow up propane tanks to burn down the building, presumably with the detainees still inside. Sadly, the people who populate the main-stream media are part of the generation of historical illiterates. Moreover, their ignorance of history, coupled with their dual mental conditions – Trump derangement syndrome and delusions of rectitude – is a dangerous combination. The Antifa bastards, largely a bunch of spoiled, white, extreme left-wing whackos, justify whatever they do by claiming that their actions are motivated solely by their desire to oppose fascism. The left-wing media eats this crap up with a spoon. No matter what Antifa does, including, breaking windows, burning cars, assaulting people with sticks, bats, and other weapons, they are immune to criticism in the media. CNN’s Don Lemon sloughs off Antifa violence by telling us, “No organization is perfect.” Of course, he doesn’t cut law enforcement the same slack. Chris Cuomo, the dumbest of all the Cuomo’s, dismissed Antifa violence as violence in “a good cause.” A good cause? Anti-fascism right? Wrong! Being historically illiterate, the media apologists for Antifa either don’t know, or simply don’t care that the tactics of Antifa are fundamentally fascist. Political extremists, all wearing common clothing, rampaging through the streets, brandishing weapons, threatening and beating up anyone who dares hold a differing opinion, is right out of the Nazi playbook. If they wore brown shirts instead of black hoods, they’d be a perfect match. But when the talking heads tell the young illiterates that Antifa is a good cause, the illiterates have no way to understand they’re being lied to. They never had a chance. They are the victims of educational malpractice. Loony lefty professors have filled their heads with their socialist bullcrap. How else to explain how, at a time of unprecedented economic opportunity, with unemployment at historic lows, incomes rising and more jobs available than workers to fill them, so many young people are enamored of socialism. There were socialists in the 1930’s, but even in the midst of the Great Depression the socialist cause never gained traction. A call for socialism in the Land of Plenty can only be the result of educational malpractice. But it’s worse. Government leaders are also complicit. Officials give aid and comfort to law breakers, while seeking to shackle law enforcement. They order the police to allow riots in Baltimore, and to do nothing when a journalist is beaten unconscious in Portland. The police ignoring crimes committed in open view is itself a crime. They don’t care. The other day, Elizabeth Warren announced she wants to allow illegal aliens to ignore our laws and to arrest the officers who enforce our laws. So when Antifa’s Willem Van Spronsen tries to burn down a detention center, and is only stopped when he’s shot and killed, there’s no outrage. Van Spronsen called the attack on the ICE facility in Tacoma “a proportionate action against enslavers and internment camp operators.” He said,“Evil says concentration camps for folks deemed lesser are necessary. The handmaid of evil says the concentration camps should be more humane.” That’s a good cause, right Cuomo? Antifa was just resisting American concentration camps to support the detainees, like World War II partisans. No one pointed out the flaw in Van Spronsen’s mania. We are not running concentration camps. If students were taught history, they’d know that’s a lie which insults the memories of the millions of concentration camp victims. And by the way, WWII partisans didn’t try to kill concentration camp inmates before the Nazis could kill them first. That’s crazy, and so is Antifa. If history was taught, the young could separate the truth from the lies. But they never learned who we were, so they can’t understand who we are. And that’s the danger. When leftist commentators piously denounce the latest words or acts of the Trump Administration preaching, “That’s doesn’t represent our values,” the illiterates believe it. They just don’t know any better. Our values derive from our history, and that piece is missing for these poor kids. When demagogues can manufacture history for their own purposes, none of us is safe. David McCullough had a suggestion. If the schools won’t do it, parents must teach their kids who we are.
Christopher Scalia, the son of late Justice Antonin Scalia, once said that “progressivism has become the haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be celebrating America.” His observation was borne out by the recent Kaepernick/Nike sneaker fiasco. Shoemaker Nike announced plans to release a line of sneakers called the Nike Air Max 1, bearing the original 13 starred U.S. flag, commonly known as the Betsy Ross flag.
Certainly, no one possibly could object to such unassuming and attractive footwear, right? Wrong! A liberal imbecile can always find something that offends him or her. And what better time to complain about America than Independence Day? Enter Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL player, who walked away from his $126 million contract, to become the poster-boy (poster-person?) for racial equality. It goes to show you just how desperate the Left is for someone to bash America. Kaepernick was never oppressed. He was a pampered athlete, who received a free college education, and then was paid more than $13 million a year. Only about 2,000 taxpayers in America report incomes that high, putting Kaepernick not in the hated 1%, but in the 0.01% in income. No matter, Kaepernick sacrificed his wealth to protest racial discrimination by kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem at NFL games. He said then that it had nothing to do with disrespecting the flag, but I guess he’s changed his mind about that, because the Betsy Ross flag really offends him. Kaepernick told Nike it shouldn’t use that version of the flag, as he and others consider it an offensive symbol due to its connection to a time when slavery was legal. He said that the “Betsy Ross” flag design – which sports 13 stars in a circle is associated with racism and slavery. Ever a slave (can I use that word?) to political correctness (or is it political cowardice?), Nike immediately cancelled the sneaker line, making the few pairs already sold collector’s items. Putting aside the fact that Leftists are immune to logic, celebrity Mike Rowe has highlighted the illogic of Kaepernick’s complaint. “He has argued that the Betsy Ross flag is ‘racist,’ because it flew at a time when slavery was legal in America. By that definition, aren’t crosses also racist? Weren’t they on churches attended by slave-owning congregants? Why not demand their removal?” “What about the Bald Eagle?” he continued. “Wasn’t our national bird flying around when slaves were held? Why not protest it as well? What about the Great Seal? Why not ban that?” Not a bad idea. After all, the Great Seal was designed by the same white man who designed the 13 starred flag, one Francis Hopkinson, of Bordentown, New Jersey. We can’t let a white Jersey guy get away with that. But what has Kaepernick got against poor Betsy Ross? He is obviously as ignorant as he is illogical. Betsy Ross was a female entrepreneur who ran her own businesses at a time when women didn’t enjoy the rights they have today. Plus, she was a single mother. So, isn’t criticism of Betsy Ross sexist and misogynistic? I bet if Betsy said she was only paid 71 pence for every pound male flagmakers made, Kaepernick would take notice. But Betsy didn’t have an easy time. She was widowed twice by the time she was 30 years old. Her second husband was a mariner, was taken prisoner by the British and shipped to Plymouth, England, where he died in prison. Betsy was a professional upholsterer. She made cartridges for the Continental Army, she made flags, and even did work for George Washington in 1774. America’s first Flag Act was enacted in 1777. Betsy was making flags at that time, but whether she actually sewed the first US flag is unclear. The Independence Hall Association backs her. “Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag. When we view the flag, we think of liberty, freedom, pride, and Betsy Ross.” (Kaepernick only thinks of racism and slavery). “The American flag flies on the moon, sits atop Mount Everest, is hurtling out in space. The flag is how America signs her name. It is no surprise that Betsy Ross has become one of the most cherished figures of American History.” The Betsy Ross story has become the stuff of legend. Quoting that great line from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” We have. Simply put, Colin Kaepernick is an ignorant boob. The patriots who fought the Revolutionary War against the British were fighting for freedom, not for slavery. When Betsy Ross was producing ammunition for the patriots and sewed the flag with 13 stars, if she did, her husband lay dying in a British prison, his crime – sailing a ship for America. You think Betsy was thinking about slavery when she sewed those stars? And Kaepernick, what is it you really want? Maybe Betsy should have left off the 5 stars representing the colonies that kept slaves. Kaepernick must have the same objection to the current US flag. Hey boob, ten of the 50 stars on today’s flag are for States that were part of the Confederacy. Maybe Kaepernick will have to require all flags to have only 40 stars from now on, so he doesn’t have to think about unpleasant history. But what to do with those 10 left over stars? Maybe Kaepernick can stick them somewhere, hopefully points first.
As we celebrate Independence Day, our republic faces great peril. We’re not at war. We don’t face an economic crisis, quite the opposite, the economy was never better. It’s not a foreign power putting us at risk. To quote Pogo, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.” Well, maybe not all of us, just some of us, namely progressive Democrats, a/k/a/ Socialists, a/k/a Leftists, a/k/a Commies, I think you get the point. They don’t see it that way, of course, and therein lies the problem. Your average, run of the mill, walking around Leftist is untroubled by doubt. He is perfectly assured that everything he thinks, says, or feels is 100% right, and that, therefore, anything that contradicts his self-assurance is wrong; not only wrong, but, extremist, fascist, racist, and homophobic. Leftists, in short, suffer from delusions of rectitude. Ronald Reagan said it best, “It isn’t so much that liberals are ignorant. It’s just that they know so many things that aren’t so.” Liberal delusions of rectitude wouldn’t be a problem if they took the advice of Voltaire, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” The Left has different ideas. It adheres to the slogan of the hooded bastards of Antifa, “I disapprove of your very existence, and will beat the crap out of you if you even show up.” Hitler’s Brown Shirts had much the same policy. This is unhealthy for a nation conceived by the blood of patriots yearning to be free, which long has been a haven for those seeking freedom. Leftists like to talk about the benefits of diversity, but diversity is more than race and ethnicity. Benjamin Franklin knew it, “Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech.” Few presidential candidates were as liberal as Adlai Stevenson, but he understood, “My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.” Liberals revere Nelson Mandela, and he also had the right perspective, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” It’s not that Leftists never considered the benefits of respect for differing opinions. Case in point – you can’t get further to the Left than Rob Reiner and Aaron Sorkin. In The American President, here’s what they wrote, “America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You’ve gotta want it bad, cause it’s gonna put up a fight. It’s gonna say, You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.” I guess they didn’t really mean it, or else, they support freedom of thought and freedom of speech only in the abstract, or, more likely, only when they’re talking. But we’re at risk because of them. In the throes of their delusions, they are the real danger to democracy that they keep talking about. The Left won’t permit conservative speech or thought on college campuses. It won’t tolerate conservative speech or thought in print. Amazon deletes positive reviews of conservative books. It won’t tolerate conservative speech online. Social media outlets regularly ban conservative contributors. If the Left gets its way, the America we grew up in will cease to exist. The new America will have more in common with Josef Stalin’s Soviet Union than the land of the free. People will live in fear of being overheard criticizing the wrong person, or expressing an un-progressive opinion, for fear of reprisals. Don’t doubt me it’s already begun. Liberals decry the anti-Communist Black Lists of the 1950’s, but fail to appreciate that the black-listing of conservative voices is no less an offense. Think the day will never come in America when a company will be forced to cancel a product because a Leftist agitator disapproves of a U.S. flag on it? Think again, that happened on Tuesday. The Left doesn’t want to permit any speech of which it does not approve, and it goes without saying, that it’s unalterably opposed to any speech made by Donald Trump, even if they don’t know what’s in it. The President chose to speak at the July 4th fireworks event on the National Mall. Leftists are appalled. They fumed, “He’s turning it into a military parade,” and lied to the uninformed, “Presidents don’t speak on July 4th.” Prepare to be informed. Presidents indeed have spoken on July 4th, and many times with a military theme, to include John Adams reviewed a military parade, Abraham Lincoln reviewed New York Militia regiments, Theodore Roosevelt spoke to 200,000 people in Pittsburgh, Woodrow Wilson spoke at Gettysburg in 1913, and on July 4th 1914 spoke the memorable line, “Our country, right or wrong.” Imagine if Trump said that! Other July 4th speakers included Presidents Truman, Kennedy, Ford, Reagan, Bush 43, and oh yes, one Il Duce Barack Obama, who in 2014 told military families, “Because of you we’re safe, we’re free, and we depend on you for our way of life.” The Marine Corps Band performed. Nobody complained. So on this Fourth of July, I say, let freedom ring. With sincere apologies to Rev. Martin Luther King – let freedom ring from the panhandle of Florida, from the Grand Tetons of Wyoming, and from Utah’s Great Salt Lake. But not only that. Let freedom ring from Hollywood California, and from New York City. Let freedom ring from Berkeley, and Oberlin College. Let it ring from the pages of the New York Times, and from MSNBC. And yes, let freedom ring even from Portland Oregon. For if freedom is to endure it must be nurtured. Back to Ronald Reagan, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”
President Trump was elected on the promise that he would stop the flow of illegal aliens crossing our southern border. He vowed to build a beautiful wall that would keep the illegals out. He tried. With a Republican Congress for two years, he should have gotten every dollar he needed to do the job, but since most Republicans were no more anxious to see the border secured than the Democrats, it didn’t get done. President Trump may not be a lawyer, but even he knows that the Constitution makes immigration laws the responsibility of the Congress. Simply put, if the immigration problem is going to be fixed, Congress needs to fix it. When tens of thousands of so-called migrants brought siege-like caravans to the border, we watched the video every night, but Democrats denied they existed. When 76,000 illegals were apprehended at the border in February, the Dems said there was no crisis. When border patrol and ICE facilities were overwhelmed, the Dems said there was no crisis. Trump manufactured the problem, it wasn’t real. Congress refused to provide money for the wall. The President then went around Congress with his national emergency declaration, rerouted money and continued construction. Things got “progressively” worse. Record-breaking numbers of illegals continued to pour in. Trump begged the Congress to do its job. Congress refused. ICE facilities were swamped. Supplies ran out. No more space for holding illegals. The President asked for help. Congress refused to provide more aid, and actually tried to reduce the bed space for illegals. Every night, those who saw Fox News saw video evidence proving the existence of a dire emergency and humanitarian disaster at the border. No, no, Democrats told us, believe us, not your lying eyes, repeat after us, “there is no crisis.” “But the pictures. Just look.” “No, no, Trump said it was a crisis, but you know how Trump lies, so it’s not true. No crisis here. Nothing to see.” The border crisis news seems to come at us in waves. It heats up, and then cools down for a time. In May, things really got hot. The President threatened Mexico with tariffs unless they did more to stop the flow of illegals. The Mexicans responded, sending troops to their southern border, and it looked like this issue was about to quiet down again, but not so. Out of the blue, President Trump announced impending raids in big cities to round up illegal aliens who already have been to court, and have been ordered deported. All Hell broke loose. Picture it. Democrats bitch and moan about giving illegals (who they call undocumented migrants) all the benefits of due process in our courts. These people got their due process. The courts have ruled, and have issued lawful orders that they be removed from the country. Now, in sane world, you would expect that members of Congress, that is, lawmakers, that is, the people who enacted the immigration laws and created the system in which immigrants could go to court to argue their claims, would at least pretend to respect the laws they themselves put into place. No such luck. In our insane world, whatever it is that Trump does, Democrats are against it. Even court orders. House Speaker, and legal giant, Nancy Pelosi said, “A violation of status is not a reason for deportation, that’s just not so.” She told President Trump he is “scaring the children.” And you thought we had a constitutional republic, right? Congress makes the laws, the court interprets the laws, and its orders must be respected, right? Not if a criminal alien might be deported. Nancy doubled down, calling Trump’s threatened coast-to-coast deportations of migrants “outside the circle of civilized human behavior.” Huh? Again, the President wasn’t planning to have people accosted at random, agents demanding, “Papers!” then rounding up unsuspecting illegal “migrants.” Again, they went to court and the court ordered them removed. So what the President was going to do was to enforce the lawful orders of the courts, which it is his duty to do. The Democrats simply are crazy. According to the Left, the courts have no right to enforce the laws enacted by the Congress. According to the Left, a president who enforces the lawful orders of the courts is not a civilized human being. The President is not without fault on this. After announcing the raids, Trump agreed to postpone them for two weeks to give Congress one more chance to do its job. I get that Trump is the deal maker, but this is not the right leverage to use. Think about it. Putting aside the reality that Congress will not act, how do you trade aliens who already have orders of removal for potential immigration law reforms? If we can’t deport people that the courts have already ordered removed, then we can’t deport anybody. Another way to view it is that if Democrats want to impeach the President, his failure to deport those subject to court orders is better grounds for impeachment than anything Mueller came up with. As this is written the House has passed a bill providing $4.5 billion for “the children” being detained at the border. It narrowly passed because Democrats, are content to decry “concentration camp” conditions at the border, while denying the government the money to change the conditions, because doing their job might help the President. Sick. The House Democrats announced, “Today we have the opportunity to help the children at the border. It is an appropriations bill, saying to the world, these children — they don’t have hygiene, they are not, in many cases, in their parents’ arms.” How touching. Many of these children are not in their parents’ arms, but not because the mean old President separated them. It’s because more than 25% of them arrive at the border in the hands of people who are not related to them, because they know if they arrive with a child they can’t be turned away. How these poor children came to be in the hands of these strangers, and what these strangers have done to them on the journey to the border, the Democrats care not. “Welcome to America, have some hygiene, and here’s how we register to vote.”
FRANK ON FRIDAY – The Witch Is Dead
Since its inception, Donald Trump has denounced the investigation of his election by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his merry band of Trump haters as a witch hunt. Trump said “witch hunt” so many times that the so-called “Mueller Report” even lists calling the investigation a witch hunt as a potential means of charging the President with obstruction of justice. The Mueller Report was issued in May, and was made public. Mueller reported that his investigation showed that the Russians tried to interfere with our election, but that there was no evidence, that is NO EVIDENCE, after thousands of subpoenas, 500 search warrants, and interrogations of witnesses in a number of countries, of any conspiracy with the Russians by any American – including the President and any of his supporters. That wasn’t good enough for the Democrats, however, who have continued to claim that there is evidence of collusion. The Dems wanted a do over. They wanted to call all the witnesses who already testified to ask them again. Then, they demanded that Robert Mueller testify in person. Mueller told us in May, in an uncomfortable 9 minute statement, that he had nothing to say other than what was in the 448 page report. If subpoenaed, he said, he would say nothing that wasn’t in the report. The Dems demanded that he testify nevertheless. They were sure that, once on the witness stand, Mueller would admit what Democrats continue to believe without evidence, that Donald Trump is guilty of obstructing justice, and that he was elected only because he made a traitorous deal with the Russians. Of course, this is crazy, but than again, the Democrats who currently run the asylum formerly known as the House of Representatives, are crazy, one and all. On Wednesday, the long awaited Mueller testimony took place. It was disastrous for Democrats, hoping against hope that Mueller would say, “Go ahead. Impeach the President. We all know he’s guilty.” That didn’t happen. Mueller came off as a doddering fool, and the Democrats were embarrassed. Don’t take my word for it. Listen to the words of depressed liberal imbeciles. Harvard Law School professor Laurence Tribe hates President Trump. he said, “Much as I hate to say it, this morning’s hearing was a disaster.” ABC’s Terry Moran announced, “Impeachment’s over.” Hillary henchperson David Axelrod, called Mueller’s testimony, “very, very painful.” Republican spokesperson attorney Harmeet Dhillon was less kind, describing Mueller’s testimonial performance as defensive, evasive and senile. That may be an understatement. Mueller continuously didn’t hear or understand the questions. More than 200 times, his answer was, “I can’t comment on that.” Several times, he had to be reminded that the question concerned something in the report. Mueller proved one thing. He had little to do with the both the investigation and the report. He did not hire the lawyers. Trump hater Andrew Weissman did that. Mueller didn’t attend interviews, and he clearly did not write the report issued in his name. For instance, anyone paying attention knows that Hillary hired the company Fusion GPS to get the phony Steele dossier filled with Russian lies. Mueller, who Democrats assured us sees all and knows all, testified he “wasn’t familiar” with Fusion. Mueller even lied, until he was forced to issue a “correction.” He told left-wing nut Ted Lieu, the Office of Legal Counsel’s long-held position against charging a president while he is in office prevented him from indicting the President. Mueller later had to walk that back. After doing a credible impression of Ralph Kramden’s “Humina, humina, humina,” Mueller admitted, “we did not reach a determination as to whether the President committed a crime.” Mueller did give Democrats the red meat they wanted, confirming the nonsensical part of the report announcing that he did not “exonerate” the President. Chairman Nadler even raised that bar, asking if Mueller “totally exonerated” Trump. Republicans honed in on this. Asked whether he had ever issued an exoneration of any other person he investigated, Mueller couldn’t think of one. Asked if he ever held any person other than Donald Trump to the “not exonerated” standard, Mueller couldn’t name one, but he lamely offered, “This was a unique situation.” That’s about the only thing Mueller said that I agree with. This was a unique situation. It is the only time that governmental officials from one Party, enlisted the Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA and representatives of foreign intelligence agencies to undo the lawful election of a President of the United States. That would make a great story if the mainstream media actually reported the news. Here’s some free legal advice. When a judge instructs a jury, the jurors are told that nothing can be proven to an absolute certainty, e.g., “total exoneration.” So the Democrat standard is that if you can’t prove the impossible, Trump is guilty. I love a fair trial. Mueller was justly savaged by the Republican Committee members. Louie Gohmert said of the President, “What he’s doing is not obstructing justice; he is pursuing justice and the fact you ran it out two years means you perpetuated injustice!” Devin Nunes began his remarks, “Welcome everyone, to the last gasp of the Russian collusion conspiracy theory,” He compared Democrat claims that evidence of collusion actually exists to those who insist that the Loch Ness Monster is real. My favorite comment, though came from California Republican Tom McClintock, who told Mueller, “You couldn’t make a legal case, so you made a political case, dropped it on our doorstep, lit it on fire, rang the doorbell and ran.” That is so true. Mueller tried to defend himself, his investigation was not a witch hunt. This was eerily reminiscent of Richard Nixon’s, “I am not a crook.” The Mueller fiasco before Congress should spell the end of Robert Mueller as the anointed savior of the Democrats. It’s a shame, because he used to have a good reputation. Now that’s gone. Mueller looked inept and foolish. By lending his formerly good name to this to a coup de etat, he did this country a grave disservice. The bottom line is that Democrats wanted Mueller to light the flame of impeachment. They failed miserably. Now they should burn. Ding dong, the witch is dead.
